Parents play a key role in keeping their teen safe at the wheel. Parents who are supportive, involved and enforce driving restrictions can lower their teen’s crash risk by 50 percent. Teens with involved parents/guardians are:
- Twice as likely to use their seat belt,
- Half as likely to speed,
- 30 percent less likely to use a cell phone while driving and
- Significantly less likely to drive with multiple passengers.
Other protective measures for teen drivers include taking drivers education which has proven to reduce the likelihood of getting a traffic violation or being in a crash and completing a written parent teen driving agreement. Doing all of these or a combination of will make for a better nights sleep for parents! Resources on teen driver safety can be found at www.parentsdrivethemessage.ne.gov. Resources include a parent-teen driving agreement and information on the state’s Graduated Driver Licensing system and driving restrictions.
